Exam 1 -- [Exam] | [Solutions]
Exam 1 in CPSC 202 will be given in class on Thursday, Oct 15. It will be a closed-book exam -- no access to books, notes, or other students will be permitted.
The exam will cover the following sections of Rosen:
Sections 1.1 through 1.5
All of Chapter 2
Sections 3.7 and 3.8
Sections 4.1 and 4.3
To prepare for the exam, you should:
1) Read the above sections of Rosen and whatever notes you've taken in class.
2) Review the first four HW assignments and solution sets.
3) For additional practice problems, sample the "review" and "supplementary" exercises in Chapters 1 through 4; solutions for many of these exercises will be distributed (in paper form) in class on Thursday, Oct. 8. Clearly, you can ignore whichever of these exercises deal with material that is NOT in the sections listed above. Also, there are far too many of these exercises for you to do them all -- hence the instruction to "sample" them.
4) Class on Tuesday, Oct. 13 will be devoted to review for the exam. Between now and then, send questions to Brady; those that cannot be answered fully by email or that come up often enough will be covered in class on Oct. 13 to the extent possible.
5) "Matrix inversion and Gaussian Elimination" is a very important topic that you should definitely review for the
exam, but it is not covered in Rosen. Please see your class notes from October 1, 2009, Professor Aspnes's
notes on linear algebra from last year
(best viewed in Firefox),
two additional practice problems,
and, once you've worked through those problems, the
solutions to them.
