Accessing the Zoo from the Zoo Annex Using FastX

Note: These instructions were verified as working 9/8/2017.


Using FastX you can turn a window on a Windows machine in the Zoo Annex (aka, the 17 Hillhouse, Room 111, cluster) into the same Linux desktop that you see when you log into a Zoo node.

Do the following:

  1. If you are not logged in:
  2. If there is a "FastX 2" icon on the left-hand side of the desktop, click on it to launch FastX.
    Otherwise:
  3. If there is an entry named "Zoo" in the FastX window, double click on it.
    Otherwise:
  4. Enter your password in the "Password" box.
  5. In the "Zoo" window that appears, click on the + sign in the upper right-hand corner.
  6. In the "FastX" window that appears, double click on "mate".
    A resizable window containing a Zoo desktop will appear.
  7. When you log out of the Zoo, close the "Zoo" window and then close the "FastX" window.
  8. Do not forget to log out of Windows when you are done:
