Chairman's Letter

This month's newsletter is dedicated to you (us) shopoholics. Is it possible that a genetic disposition compels us to spend excessively? There is in fact a name for your (our) condition - oniomania. Binge shoppers are categorized with compulsive disorders, as well as with those suffering from anxiety and depression. Medical research hopes to prove that SSRIs, such as Paxil, may provide relief.

So it seems true. Some of us are wired from birth to spend excessively.

Implications? Telemarketers could use DNA to determine who not to bother at dinner time.

If you seriously can't control spending, get help. Don't be ashamed. Like most mental conditions, treatments exist.

For the rest of us (you), your brain will release a torrent of hormones making you feel satisfaction and pleasure knowing you just bought something to enjoy. Steady. And don't let fear from 9-11 prevent deserved gratification.

With best regards,

Todd R. Smith
Chairman

Shopoholics - Fact or Fiction? Do you believe that people can get addicted to shopping? I do. I take the word shopoholic very seriously. I have known people that just are not happy unless they have money to spend. When they run out, they are miserable. More Info
