CPSC 323 and the CS electives using the Zoo are so large this term that having everyone write and debug their programs while sitting at a Zoo console would not be possible, especially on the nights before programming assignments are due. Thus we have created a Zoo Annex from the Windows machines in the cluster at 17 Hillhouse, Room 111. Having logged into one of those machines, you can run a program called FastX to open an Xterm window on a Zoo node or to create a window containing an entire Linux desktop. Instructions for running this software are at http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/classes/cs323/doc/FastX-Annex.html And if you have a Windows machine or Mac yourself, you can install and run the same software; see http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/classes/cs323/doc/FastX-MacOSX.html or http://zoo.cs.yale.edu/classes/cs323/doc/FastX-Windows.html [These instructions are a work in progress, so if you have suggestions for improving them, please let me know.] Note: The Annex is open for general use except when classes are scheduled there. In particular, this term it is open every Sunday through Thursday night from 7 pm until midnight. Warning: If you have used Gnome with FastX in the past, you will need to use MATE (a light-weight version of Gnome) instead. The MATE desktop is slightly different, with the main difference being that "Log Out" is in the "System" menu on the top left part of the screen rather than in the "First Last" menu on the top right part. Thus the on-line instructions for using FastX now read: Click on "Start new session" to produce a pulldown menu and click on either "KDE" or "MATE" to choose a window manager (MATE is a light-weight version of Gnome, which is the default in the Zoo) or "Xterm" to open a terminal window. WARNINGS: + Gnome does not work with FastX, so do not choose the "Gnome" option. + If "MATE" is not an option, choose "mate-session (Desktop)" instead. + If neither is available: * Choose the "+ New" option. * Enter the command "mate-session", click the "Desktop (with size)" radio button, and click the "OK" button. Otherwise everything is the same.
