Title: "A Protocol for Packet Network Intercommunication"
Author: Yu Liao
Problem:
What are the fundamental issues related to the interconnection of packet switching networks
Contribution
A protocol design and philosophy that supports the sharing of resources that exist in different packet switching networks are presented.
Key Ideas
- Gateway acts as interface between different networks.
- Addressing, segmentation/reassembly, windowing for sequencing and flow control, connection are discussed in the paper.
Critique
- significant contribution: many of the key designs in contemporary known as TCP/IP are discussed in the paper.
Lessons learned
It doesn't recognize that in order to support multiple types of services, a separation of TCP from IP, and using IP - datagram protocol as basic building block is neccessary.
