Lecture 17: Mid Term Review.

Midterm Exam Date Tuesday October 9, 7pm - 8:30pm. Davies Auditorium Closed book, no notes, no electronics, no kidding.
Sample Midterm Exam available . ( solutions ) The actual exam will also include UNIX questions. I will give you a transcript with some of the commands X'd out. You will have to deduce those commands (answer). Also, Nathan pointed out that the date command, which I use all the time, was not actually included in the UNIX tutorial. I have addressed that omission.

Last Friday, there was a conference at the Management School on The Rise of Machine Learning in Asset Management

In 1995, I chaired a conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications on Wall Street.

In the past two decades, the main change is not in the fundamental techniques, but in the power and capacity of the machines.

Most of machine learning involves calculating a decision boundary.

Methods include neural networks, hidden Markov models, support vector machines and other.

On Wall Street, these programs can make money. However:

They do not know what they know.
They do not know what they want.
They do not know what you want.
They do not know what society wants.
