Welcome to CS 201!
Logical problem of the day:
I'm going to hand you one thousand dollars, in one-dollar bills. Your
job is to put those dollar bills in envelopes, in such a manner that
no matter what number of dollars I ask you for you'll hand me the
appropriate combination of envelopes. What is the fewest number of
envelopes required?

Bonus topic: AI on Wall Street
Last Friday, there was a conference at the Management School
on The Rise of Machine Learning in Asset Management
In 1995, I chaired a conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications
on Wall Street.
In the past two decades, the main change is not in the fundamental
techniques, but in the power and capacity of the machines.
Most of machine learning involves calculating a decision boundary.
Methods include neural networks, hidden Markov models, support vector machines and other.
On Wall Street, these programs can make money. However:
- They do not know what they know.
- They do not know what they want.
- They do not know what you want.
- They do not know what society wants.
