Note: These instructions were verified as working 9/8/2017.
Using FastX you can turn a window on a Windows machine in the Zoo Annex
(aka, the 17 Hillhouse, Room 111, cluster) into the same Linux desktop that
you see when you log into a Zoo node.
Do the following:
- If you are not logged in:
- Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE.
A new screen with a Usage Agreement will appear.
- Click "OK".
A new screen with a NetID and Password box will appear.
- Enter your NetID and Password and click the right arrow.
Windows will log you in eventually.
- If there is a "FastX 2" icon on the left-hand side of the desktop, click
on it to launch FastX.
Otherwise:
- Click on the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner of the
screen.
A new box will appear with a list of applications.
- Scroll down the list to the "FastX 2" entry
and click on it.
A second, indented "FastX 2" entry will appear.
- Launch FastX by clicking on the indented "FastX 2" entry.
- If there is an entry named "Zoo" in the FastX window, double click on it.
Otherwise:
- Click on the + sign in the upper right-hand corner of the FastX
window.
- In the tiny window that appears, click on "ssh".
- In the "New SSH Connection" window that appears,
- Enter "Zoo" in the Name field.
- Enter "node.zoo.cs.yale.edu" in the Host field.
- Do not change the Port field.
- Enter your Yale netID in the User field.
- Do not change the Sci field.
- Click "Save" to save the configuration.
- If warned that "This host is not recognized by the system.", click
"Continue".
- Enter your password in the "Password" box.
- In the "Zoo" window that appears, click on the + sign in the upper
right-hand corner.
- In the "FastX" window that appears, double click on "mate".
A resizable window containing a Zoo desktop will appear.
- When you log out of the Zoo, close the "Zoo" window and then close the
"FastX" window.
- Do not forget to log out of Windows when you are done:
- Click on the Windows icon in the lower left-hand corner of the
screen.
- In the box that appears, mouse over third icon above the Windows
icon so that your name appears.
- Click on that icon.
A box containing "Signout" will appear.
- Click on "Signout".
