  • I have office hours Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 3pm, NOT on Friday, on zoom, id 459 434 2854.

  • Guest speaker Monday April 17th: Ben Fried. Venture Partner at Rally Ventures I met Ben years ago at Morgan Stanley. In 2008, he joined Google in NYC as CIO and Site lead. Last year he joined Rally Ventures.
I was born and raised in New York City, where I attended public schools and majored in Computer Science at Columbia College. From 2008 to 2022 I worked at Google, where I was the Chief Information Officer and site lead for Google New York; I also founded and led two businesses, Google Domains and Google Registry. I spent the 14 years prior to that working at Morgan Stanley, where I rose to the level of Managing Director, and, among other things, led teams responsible for its Internet offerings and the proprietary libraries and middleware that powered the business.

I’ve spent all my life working in computing. That has taken me to the senior leadership level at Morgan Stanley and at Google. I’ve also been the first employee at a startup, and now I work for a venture capital firm that invests in tech startups. I’ve learned a lot about what makes for a successful career in computing, and about the decisions you can make along the way to have the kind of career you want. Computing is a vast field, and there are many career paths for someone with a CS degree, and even more choices along the way. I’d like to spend our time together talking about what I’ve learned, to help you think about your career, and the choices ahead for you.

Ben wants to eat at Frank Pepe's. It is located at 157 Wooster Street - about a 20 minute walk, but worth it.

    Truth or Consequences

We observe that Senators and Supreme Court justices often give explanations or opinions that hide or obscure their real reasons. That is, they lie. Should a computer lie? or more realistically, When should a computer lie? We call your attention to HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

There is a new discussion topic: when should a computer lie?

Are These 10 Lies Justified? from The New York Times, December 14, 2015. Using polleverywhere, list which of the ten lies from the NYT article you believe justified. https://pollev.com/slade
