Introduction Earnings season will start to slow down next week, giving way to economic data. Most attention will be given to the third quarter GDP number, as it will show whether or not the economy has slipped into a recession. Military strikes and bioterrorism may also affect trading, particularly if events become suddenly better or worse. Earnings Releases Earnings season will slow down next week with approximately 870 companies scheduled to report next week. Dominating the headlines will be the insurance sector with Chubb {CB}, Cigna {CI}, Hartford Financial Services {HIG}, and John Hancock Financial Services {JHF} all reporting quarterly results. Details on those companies' earnings reports are presented in the table below. Company Ticker EPS Date Estimate ----------------------------------------------------------- Hartford Financial HIG ($0.21) 10/29/01 Chubb CB ($0.04) 10/30/01 John Hancock JHF $0.65 11/01/01 Cigna Corp. CI $1.64 11/02/01 A complete listing of companies, with market capitalizations above $10 billion, expected to report next week is presented in "The Week Ahead" article on Wall Street City. Economic Releases Economists will receive confirmation next week of whether the economy slipped into a recession during the third quarter and if a recovery will begin in the fourth quarter. Q3 U.S. GDP will be released on Wednesday and is expected to show a 0.7 percent drop - an indication that the economy has entered into a recession. On Thursday, the National Association of Purchasing Manager's Index for October is expected to show that the economy is continuing to retract. Ironically, the markets could trade upwards following the release of both reports since negative economic numbers would all but assure that the FOMC cuts rates for a 10th time this year when it meets on November 6. Economic releases scheduled for next week are listed in the table below. Report Estimate DATE ------------------------------------------------------------ Consumer Confidence 96.0 10/30/01 Gross Domestic Product (0.7%) 10/31/01 GDP Price Deflator 1.8% 10/31/01 Chicago Purchasing Manager 43.0 10/31/01 Personal Income 0.1% 11/1/01 Personal Expenditures (0.9%) 11/1/01 Construction Spending (0.7%) 11/1/01 NAPM 44.8 11/1/01 NAPM Prices Paid 34.5 11/1/01 Unemployment Rate 5.2% 11/1/01 ____________________________________________________________ 4.
