I left him an extremely short voice mail thanking him for the book and asking 
him not to contact me again unless his message is kind and positive.  I tried 
to make my tone very pleasant and calm.

On Ann's and your advice, I'm going to rescue the shredded letter/envelope 
out of the trash; be careful what you toss in there.
