Washington officials= are saying Sen. Jeffords is planning to abandon the Republican Party, alth= ough no one is certain whether he'll become a Democrat or an Independent. = Either way, the move would give Democrats the Senate majority, which could = have a major impact on the Bush administration's ability to implement its n= ational energy policy. Sen. Jeffords has scheduled a press conference from= Vermont on Thursday morning, and ENL's Washington bureau will bring you de= tails on his announcement. Washington Bureau Chief Jay Cranford reports t= he House Energy and Commerce Committee is scheduled to mark up the Electric= ity Emergency Relief Act on Thursday. Jay expects Democrats to once again = attempt to include price caps on wholesale power in the markup. Jay a= lso reports, next week President Bush is scheduled to travel to California = to assess the energy situation.
