Paper review : A Reliable Multicast Framework for Light-weight Session and Application
Level Framing (FJML+95)
Reviewer : Hai Fang (hfang@acm.org)
- Goal
To provide a reliable multicast framework for light-weight sessions and application level framing.
- Contribution
This paper provides the design princeple and the basic algorithm of SRM; the algorithms are efficient,
robust, and scalable to very large networks and very large sessions.
- Main ideas
- The reliable data delivery for multicast is not trivial, and many of the approaches used for
unicast need to be modified or redesigned.
- SRM provides mechanisms to make the reliable multicast scalable.
- SRM framework is generally applicable to a wide variety of applications besides wb.
- Evaluation
- Significance rating: 4
This paper proposes the problems met for the raliable data delivery under the multicast infrastructure.
The basic principle and the algorithms are effective for a variety of applications. And the basic idea
can be extended or modified to fit to other applications.
- Convincing rating
The authors give the wb as an application of the SRM framework. They analyze the algorithms, give a
simulation, and explore the parameter settings. They also propose the possible extensions of the
basic approach.
- Limitation
The recovery time is not as fast as to fit the need of the real-time applications.
- Conclusion
How to make the reliable multicast scalable is an interesting and chanllenging research topic.
